Article 19 – Page 17 of your Collective Agreement

  • An employee will be granted bereavement leave  of five (5) consecutive working days without loss of salary in the event of the death of a:
    • Spouse
    • Child
    • Step-Child
    • Mother
    • Step-Mother
    • Father
    • Step-Father
    • Brother
    • Step-Brother
    • Sister
    • Step-Sister; as well as for any other relative who was a member of the household.

These days are to be taken immediately following the death.  One (1) day leave may be retained at the employee’s request for use in the case where actual interment or cremation is at a later date, or two (2) of five (5) days where travel is required.

  • An employee will be granted bereavement leave of three (3) consecutive working days without loss of salary in the event of the death of a:
    • Mother-in-law
    • Father-in-law
    • Sister-in-law
    • Brother-in-law
    • Son-in-law
    • Daughter-in-law
    • Grandchild
    • Grandparent

These days are to be taken immediately following the death.  One (1) day leave may be retained at the employee’s request for use in the case where actual interment or cremation is at a later date, or two (2) of three (3) days where travel is required.

An employee will be granted compassionate leave of one (1) working day without loss of salary in the event of the death of a relative not referred to above.

The Winnipeg School Division will grant a short leave of absence to support staff for Emergency Illness in the family or household or family emergency for one day and deduct up to four (4) days at minimum rate. This is for your immediate family only (spouse, child, step-child, mother, step-mother, father, step-father, sister or brother). It does not include other relatives such as your mother-in-law or father-in-law.
